Our story
How we started
We first opened our doors for business on June 12, 2004 in Community 4, Tema, Ghana. We started as a small retail facility with three staff. Just like every fledgling business, we had our share of challenges. Like a seedling in a ruthless thicket, we struggled to take off and even to find our feet in a market, monopolistically dominated, by two strong pharmacies in Tema then. We had limited funds to purchase products after setting up the place and suppliers were unwilling to risk giving us any credit line as a new company. We started with literally no pharmaceutical products. We only had a few analgesics and blood tonics from one particular manufacturer. These, coupled with other challenges in an unfriendly terrain, affected our ability to operate effectively and to attract any meaningful numbers of customers. All staff had to work 14-hour shifts since we could not recruit more staff. Despite our skeleton staff, we were open every day, 7am-10pm without letup. On many occasions, we contemplated closing down due to the frustrations of near-zero sales. However, with our vision for Top-Up pharmacy in mind, and our tenacity to succeed, we decided to rise above the challenges and stay afloat.
